History of Afrikaans

Afrikaans developed from 17th-century Dutch spoken by settlers at the Cape. Influenced by Malay, Portuguese, Khoisan, and Bantu languages, it diverged significantly from European Dutch. Afrikaans was standardized in the early 20th century and became an official South African language. Today it's spoken by diverse communities.

Is Afrikaans Hard to Learn?

Easy

Afrikaans is considered one of the easiest languages for English speakers. It has no verb conjugations (verbs don't change for person), simplified grammar compared to Dutch, and phonetic spelling. Many words are recognizable from English or Dutch.
