History of Vietnamese
Vietnamese was historically written in Chinese characters, then a modified script called Chữ Nôm. Portuguese missionaries introduced the Latin-based Quốc ngữ script in the 17th century, which became standard during French colonization. Vietnamese has absorbed Chinese vocabulary but remains grammatically distinct.
Is Vietnamese Hard to Learn?
Vietnamese has six tones and unfamiliar vowel sounds for English speakers. However, it uses the Latin alphabet (with diacritics), has simple grammar with no conjugations or plurals, and consistent syllable structure. Each word is typically one syllable.
