History of Urdu
Urdu developed in Mughal India as a fusion of Hindi, Persian, Arabic, and Turkic elements. It was the language of poetry and high culture in Mughal courts. After partition in 1947, Urdu became Pakistan's national language while Hindi became India's. Urdu poetry (ghazals) and Urdu literature remain celebrated worldwide.
Is Urdu Hard to Learn?
Urdu requires learning the Perso-Arabic script, written right-to-left with letters connecting. Grammar is essentially identical to Hindi. Urdu draws formal vocabulary from Persian and Arabic, while Hindi draws from Sanskrit, but everyday speech is mutually intelligible.
