History of Tamazight (Tifinagh)
Berber-speaking peoples have lived across North Africa for millennia, and their ancestral Tifinagh script survives in ancient Libyco-Berber inscriptions found from Morocco to Libya. Arabic became dominant after the 7th-century Islamic conquest, and under 20th-century Arabization policies Tamazight was excluded from Moroccan schools and official life for decades. A Berber cultural movement pushed for recognition from the 1970s onward, leading Morocco to found IRCAM in 2001, adopt Neo-Tifinagh for schools in 2003, and make Tamazight an official language alongside Arabic in the 2011 constitution.
Is Tamazight (Tifinagh) Hard to Learn?
This entry describes Central Atlas Tamazight, spoken in Morocco's Middle and High Atlas, one of several Tamazight varieties (alongside Kabyle, Tashelhiyt and Riffian) that differ enough to hinder mutual understanding, so vocabulary here does not necessarily match those other varieties. Beyond pharyngealized consonants and consonant clusters with no vowels between them, learners must also pick up the Tifinagh script itself, which looks nothing like Latin or Arabic and only became Morocco's official Tamazight script in 2003.
