History of Chechen
Chechen is indigenous to the North Caucasus, where its speakers have lived for millennia, and it is unrelated to the Turkic, Slavic and Iranian languages that surround it. It was written in Arabic script before the Soviet period, switched to Latin in 1925, then to Cyrillic in 1938. The mass deportation of the Chechen people to Central Asia in 1944 and the wars of the 1990s and 2000s scattered speakers widely and disrupted education, though Chechen remains in vigorous everyday use and holds official status in the Chechen Republic alongside Russian.
Is Chechen Hard to Learn?
Chechen has one of the largest consonant inventories in Europe, including ejectives and pharyngeals that English lacks entirely, plus a rich vowel system with nasalization. Grammatically it is ergative-absolutive — the subject of a transitive verb takes a special case — and it sorts nouns into eight classes that trigger agreement. It is unrelated to Russian, Turkish or any Indo-European language, so almost no vocabulary transfers.
