History of Chamorro

Chamorro has been spoken in the Mariana Islands for roughly four thousand years, brought by Austronesian voyagers. Spanish colonization from 1668 devastated the population and layered a large Spanish vocabulary onto the language. Later German, Japanese and American administrations pushed it further aside, and English-only school policies under US rule caused a steep decline in transmission through the 20th century. Chamorro became an official language of Guam in 1974, and immersion programmes, media broadcasting and university teaching now work to rebuild fluency among younger speakers.

Is Chamorro Hard to Learn?

Hard

Chamorro uses an Austronesian focus system where verb morphology marks which participant the sentence is about, and it forms words by infixation — inserting material inside a stem rather than only adding prefixes or suffixes. Spanish loanwords give English speakers a useful foothold in vocabulary, but the grammar has no close parallel in European languages.
