History of Crimean Tatar (Latin)

Crimean Tatar formed among Turkic, including Kipchak and Cuman, populations of the Crimean peninsula and became the language of the Crimean Khanate (1441-1783), an Ottoman vassal state. After the Russian Empire annexed Crimea in 1783, Crimean Tatar intellectual life continued, notably through the reformist educator Ismail Gasprinski in the late 19th century. In May 1944, Stalin's government deported the entire Crimean Tatar population to Central Asia and Siberia, and everyday use of the language collapsed in Crimea for decades. Crimean Tatars began returning to Crimea after 1989, and the language has been undergoing an active but fragile revival since.

Is Crimean Tatar (Latin) Hard to Learn?

Hard

Crimean Tatar is an agglutinative Kipchak Turkic language with vowel harmony and Turkish-like case and possessive suffixes, which makes it more approachable for learners who already know Turkish. It is complicated by existing in two current orthographies, Latin and Cyrillic, and by decades of Russian and Uzbek loanwords absorbed by exiled communities after the 1944 deportation, so vocabulary and spelling can vary between speaker communities.
