About Faroese
Faroese spelling was fixed in 1854 by V.U. Hammershaimb on etymological principles that mirror Old Norse and Icelandic rather than actual pronunciation, which is why the letter ð has no consistent sound value in modern speech.

History of Faroese
Faroese descends from the Old Norse brought by Norwegian settlers who reached the islands in the 9th century, and it evolved in relative isolation from mainland Scandinavian languages. After the Reformation in the 16th century, Danish became the language of the church, courts and schools, and Faroese survived for nearly 300 years mainly as a spoken language with almost no written use. A written standard was created in 1854, feeding a 19th and 20th century literary revival that became tied to a home rule movement. Faroese became the official language of the Faroe Islands under the 1948 Home Rule Act, with Danish still taught as a required second language.
Is Faroese Hard to Learn?
Faroese keeps the four-case, three-gender inflectional system that English has lost, so nouns, adjectives and articles all decline depending on their role in the sentence. The 1854 spelling standard was built on Old Norse and Icelandic etymology rather than modern pronunciation, so written forms and spoken forms diverge substantially, most famously with the letter ð, which carries no fixed sound of its own. Considerable dialect variation between islands adds a further layer for learners.
