About Fon
The word "voodoo" comes from Fon "vodun", meaning spirit or deity. Fon speakers carried this religious vocabulary to the Americas during the transatlantic slave trade, which is why it survives in Haitian Vodou and Brazilian Candomblé and Vodun traditions today.

History of Fon
Fon was the language of the royal court of the Kingdom of Dahomey, based in Abomey from the 17th to 19th centuries, and spread through Dahomey's military and administrative reach across what is now southern Benin. It remains a national language of Benin today, taught experimentally in some schools alongside French, which is still the sole official language.
Is Fon Hard to Learn?
Fon has only two phonemic tones, high and low, which is a simpler tonal system than most of its Kwa and Gbe relatives. Grammar is isolating with subject-verb-object order, but the Latin orthography's extra letters and digraphs take some getting used to for English speakers.
