History of Manx

Manx descends from the Old Irish brought to the Isle of Man by Gaelic settlers, diverging from Irish and Scottish Gaelic over centuries of relative isolation and Norse contact. Its written form was established in the 17th century by Bishop John Phillips' translation of the Book of Common Prayer. Speaker numbers collapsed through the 19th and 20th centuries as English took over education and commerce, and Ned Maddrell, the last traditional native speaker, died in 1974. A revival movement built from recordings and written sources has since produced adult learners, official support, and Bunscoill Ghaelgagh, a Manx-medium primary school opened in 2001.

Is Manx Hard to Learn?

Hard

Manx is a Goidelic Celtic language with verb-subject-object word order, initial consonant mutations that change the start of words grammatically, and no simple words for yes and no — answers echo the verb. Its spelling was devised on English rather than Irish conventions, so it looks unlike Irish or Scottish Gaelic despite being closely related.
