History of Jamaican Patois
Jamaican Patois formed in the 17th and 18th centuries on Jamaican plantations, where enslaved West Africans speaking mainly Akan and other Niger-Congo languages acquired English vocabulary while retaining African grammatical structure. It remained stigmatized as 'broken English' for centuries, but the Cassidy writing system and later the Jamaican Language Unit at the University of the West Indies established a standard orthography, and Patois is now recognized as a language in its own right and used widely in music, poetry and broadcasting.
Is Jamaican Patois Hard to Learn?
Most Jamaican Patois vocabulary is recognizable to English speakers, so comprehension comes quickly. The real learning is grammatical: tense and aspect are marked by separate particles rather than verb endings, the copula behaves differently, and plurals and possession are formed without English's -s endings.
