History of Jingpo
Jingpho belongs to the Sal branch of Tibeto-Burman languages and is closely related to Singpho, the form spoken by Kachin communities who migrated into Assam in northeast India. It was first written down by American Baptist missionaries in the late 19th century, most notably Ola Hanson, who compiled the first Kachin-English dictionary. The Latin-based orthography he devised was reformed in 1965 and remains in use in Myanmar and China today, alongside Burmese-script materials produced for religious and educational purposes.
Is Jingpo Hard to Learn?
Jingpho has four tones in open syllables and two in closed syllables, a feature with no equivalent in English that changes word meaning entirely. Centuries of contact with Burmese and Shan speakers mean the vocabulary includes many loanwords from both languages on top of the native Tibeto-Burman core, so words do not cluster around one recognizable source the way, for instance, Latin-derived vocabulary does in English. Jingpho verbs also mark the subject and object directly on the verb.
