History of Kikongo
Kikongo was the court and trade language of the Kingdom of Kongo, a centralized state that dominated west-central Africa from around the 14th century until it fragmented in the 19th century. Portuguese missionaries began transcribing it within decades of first contact in 1483, producing a catechism in 1624 and, in 1652, one of the oldest surviving dictionary manuscripts of any Bantu language. Because so many people taken in the Atlantic slave trade came from Kongo territory, Kikongo vocabulary survived in the Americas in creoles and religious traditions including Gullah, Palenquero, and Cuban Palo. Today it remains a recognized national language in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola.
Is Kikongo Hard to Learn?
Like other Bantu languages, Kikongo marks agreement across the sentence with noun-class prefixes rather than a simple singular or plural system, so adjectives and verbs change shape to match the class of the noun they refer to. Pronunciation is regular and the five-vowel system is straightforward for an English speaker. The bigger practical hurdle is dialect fragmentation: Kikongo covers a cluster of related varieties (Kisikongo, Kiyombe, Kizombo and others) across three countries, and the widely taught trade language Kituba (Kikongo ya Leta) is a separate, simplified language that should not be treated as interchangeable with Kikongo proper.
