About Khasi
Khasi has no native script of its own. A well known Khasi legend says the community's ancient writing was lost in a great flood, so the language survived only orally for centuries until the Welsh missionary Thomas Jones adapted the Latin alphabet for it starting in 1841.

History of Khasi
Khasi speakers relied on oral tradition for their history and law until the 19th century, when an attempt to write the language in Bengali-Assamese script did not take hold. The Welsh Calvinist missionary Thomas Jones standardized a Latin-based spelling from 1841, and this orthography became the basis for Khasi literature, church use, and education. Khasi is an official language of Meghalaya today, and it is the most widely spoken tribal language of Northeast India, though UNESCO still classifies it as vulnerable.
Is Khasi Hard to Learn?
Khasi vocabulary has no relationship to English, so almost every word has to be learned from zero. It marks noun gender (masculine, feminine, diminutive) with prefixes even on inanimate objects, and it splits nouns into human and non-human classifier categories. It has consonant clusters at the start of syllables that take practice for English speakers, though unlike many Southeast Asian languages Khasi has no tones.
