About Komi
In the 14th century the missionary Stephen of Perm devised a dedicated alphabet, Old Permic (Anbur), specifically to translate Christian texts into Komi, one of the few scripts custom-built for a Uralic language before the modern era.

History of Komi
The Komi were Christianized in the 14th century by the missionary Stephen of Perm, who created the Old Permic script specifically to render Komi in writing for religious texts. That original script fell out of general use within a couple of centuries, and Komi was later written in Cyrillic. The Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was established in the 1920s, giving the language official status alongside Russian. Speaker numbers have declined sharply since the late Soviet period as Russian has become dominant in towns and cities.
Is Komi Hard to Learn?
Komi has an extensive case system with around 16 to 18 cases and no grammatical gender, which is typical of Uralic languages. Negation is formed with a special negative verb that itself conjugates for person and tense, rather than a standalone word for 'no,' a pattern it shares with distant relatives like Finnish and Estonian. Extra Cyrillic letters absent from Russian add another layer for learners coming from Russian literacy.
