History of Makassar
The Makassarese ruled the powerful Gowa Sultanate, which controlled trade across eastern Indonesia until Dutch conquest in 1669. Makassarese sailors were renowned navigators who reached Australia before Europeans. The Lontara script, shared with Bugis, was used for literature and trade records.
Is Makassar Hard to Learn?
Makassarese grammar is Austronesian and accessible. The traditional Lontara script is rarely used today. Speech levels exist but are simpler than Javanese. Indonesian knowledge helps with vocabulary.
