Why Learn Malay (Jawi)?

Jawi connects to Islamic Malay heritage and classical texts.

History of Malay (Jawi)

Jawi developed as Arabic script was adapted for Malay following the spread of Islam through the Malay Archipelago, with the 14th-century Terengganu Inscription Stone among the earliest surviving evidence of its use. It became the standard script for classical Malay literature, law codes, and royal correspondence across the Malacca Sultanate and later Malay states. British and Dutch colonial administration promoted the Latin-based Rumi alphabet instead, and Jawi's everyday use declined through the 20th century. It retains official or co-official status in Brunei and in Malaysia's Kelantan and Terengganu states, and is still taught as part of Islamic and Malay-language education.

Is Malay (Jawi) Hard to Learn?

Hard

Malay grammar itself is simple, but Jawi adds an entirely new right-to-left Arabic-derived script with six extra letters for sounds Arabic doesn't have (such as ca, nga, pa, and ga). Short vowels are often left unmarked, so readers frequently need to already know a word to pronounce it correctly. Jawi is now used mainly in religious and heritage contexts, so structured courses and learning material are far scarcer than for standard Latin-script Malay.
