About Marwadi
Marwari merchant communities carried the language, and a dedicated cursive accounting script called Mahajani, across India through their trade networks, which is part of why the word 'Marwari' became synonymous with 'businessman' in much of India regardless of the speaker's actual language.

History of Marwadi
Marwari developed from Old Western Rajasthani, sometimes called Dingal, a literary language it shared with Gujarati and that was used by Rajasthani bards and court chroniclers for centuries. It became the court and literary language of the Marwar kingdom centered on Jodhpur, and merchant communities used the Mahajani script for account books and correspondence long before Devanagari literacy became common. Today the Indian census usually classifies Marwari as a dialect of Hindi rather than a separate language, a status that Marwari speakers and activists continue to contest.
Is Marwadi Hard to Learn?
Marwari shares roughly 50 to 65 percent of its vocabulary with Hindi, so Hindi learners will recognize a lot, but a regular sound shift catches people out: where Hindi has 's', Marwari often has 'h', as in Hindi sona versus Marwari hono for gold. Vowels can be nasalized in ways that change meaning, and word order is subject-object-verb, as in Hindi. The main practical obstacle is finding graded learning material, since Marwari is taught far less formally than Hindi.
