About Nahuatl (Eastern Huasteca)
Nahuatl-family languages gave English several everyday words by way of Spanish, including tomato (from tomatl), chocolate (from xocolatl), avocado (from ahuacatl) and coyote (from coyotl). These entered English through the Nahuatl of central Mexico, but the same roots are still used today in modern varieties like Eastern Huasteca Nahuatl.

History of Nahuatl (Eastern Huasteca)
Nahuatl was the language of the Aztec Empire and had spread widely across central Mexico before the Spanish conquest. The Huasteca region, on the northeastern edge of the Nahuatl-speaking world, saw less of the population collapse and land loss that devastated central Mexico in the colonial period, which helped the language remain a first language for large rural populations there. Today Eastern Huasteca Nahuatl speakers are concentrated in municipalities such as Huejutla de Reyes in Hidalgo and Chicontepec in Veracruz.
Is Nahuatl (Eastern Huasteca) Hard to Learn?
This entry is for Eastern Huasteca Nahuatl specifically (spoken mainly in Hidalgo and Veracruz), not Nahuatl in general: modern Nahuatl varieties differ enough in sound and vocabulary that speakers of some are not mutually intelligible with others, so these words should not be assumed to match Classical Nahuatl or the Nahuatl of central Mexico. The language is agglutinative, building long words by stacking prefixes and suffixes onto a verb root, including markers for both subject and object on the same verb. Nouns take an absolutive suffix when unpossessed, and the traditional number system is vigesimal, counting in twenties rather than tens.
