Why Learn Punjabi (Shahmukhi)?
Shahmukhi script connects to Pakistani Punjabi literature and music.
History of Punjabi (Shahmukhi)
Shahmukhi grew out of the Perso-Arabic script used for Persian and Urdu in Mughal-era Punjab, and became the standard way of writing Punjabi in what is now Pakistan. Punjab's 1947 partition split the language community across two countries and two scripts, with Indian Punjab adopting the unrelated Gurmukhi script instead. Shahmukhi shares most of its letters and Nastaliq calligraphic style with Urdu, and remains the script of Pakistani Punjabi literature and Sufi poetry, such as the verses of Bulleh Shah, even though Urdu remains Pakistan's dominant written language.
Is Punjabi (Shahmukhi) Hard to Learn?
Shahmukhi layers a right-to-left Perso-Arabic script, shared with Urdu, on top of Punjabi's lexical tone system, itself an unusual feature for an Indo-Aryan language. Short vowels are inconsistently marked, so accurate pronunciation often depends on already knowing the word. Because most Punjabi speakers in Pakistan read and write primarily in Urdu, dedicated Shahmukhi learning resources are considerably scarcer than for Gurmukhi-script Punjabi.
