History of Yakut
Yakut speakers migrated north into the Lena River basin around the 13th and 14th centuries, carrying a Turkic language into territory occupied by Tungusic and Mongolic peoples, whose languages left deep marks on Yakut vocabulary. The language was first written using missionary transcriptions, then the phonetically precise Novgorodov alphabet in the 1920s, then Latin, and finally Cyrillic from 1939. Unlike many Siberian languages, Yakut has retained a large speaker community and holds official status alongside Russian in the Sakha Republic.
Is Yakut Hard to Learn?
Yakut is agglutinative with vowel harmony, stacking long chains of suffixes onto word stems, and it uses a Cyrillic alphabet extended with extra letters for sounds Russian lacks. Its vocabulary is harder than other Turkic languages for a learner who knows Turkish, because a large share of it comes from Mongolic and Tungusic contact rather than common Turkic roots.
