History of Sindhi
Sindhi developed from Indo-Aryan in the lower Indus valley, one of the world's oldest continuously settled regions and home to the Indus Valley Civilization. It was historically written in several scripts, including Khudabadi, Khojki and Devanagari, until the British administration standardized a 52-letter Perso-Arabic alphabet in 1853. Partition in 1947 split the speaker community: Sindhi is a provincial language of Sindh in Pakistan, written in Perso-Arabic, while in India it is a scheduled language of the constitution, often written in Devanagari by a diaspora dispersed across several states.
Is Sindhi Hard to Learn?
Sindhi's Perso-Arabic alphabet has 52 letters — one of the largest of any Arabic-derived script — and it usually leaves short vowels unwritten. It also has four implosive consonants, sounds made by drawing air inward that are rare worldwide and hard for English speakers to produce. Past-tense sentences use an ergative construction, and the language is written in two entirely different scripts depending on the country.
