About Tongan
Tonga is the only Pacific nation never formally colonized by a foreign power. It was a self-governing British-protected state from 1900 to 1970, kept control of its own internal affairs throughout, and has had an unbroken line of hereditary monarchs, the only one left in the Pacific islands.

History of Tongan
The Tuʻi Tonga dynasty dates back many centuries and at its height extended Tongan influence across much of the Western Pacific. Wesleyan Methodist missionaries arrived in the early 19th century and worked with King George Tupou I to codify Tongan law and orthography as the kingdom modernized. The current standard spelling system, including consistent use of the ʻokina and macrons, was formalized by the missionary linguist C. M. Churchward in the mid-20th century. Tonga became fully independent of its British treaty relationship in 1970 and remains a constitutional monarchy today.
Is Tongan Hard to Learn?
Tongan marks a distinction between alienable and inalienable possession (different possessive words depending on whether something is inherently yours, like a body part or parent, versus something you merely own), a category English does not have. It also has three formal registers, ordinary speech, honorific language used about chiefs, and a separate royal register used only for the monarch, so the 'correct' word for common actions like eating or sleeping can change depending on who you are talking about. Word order is verb-subject-object, the reverse of English.
