About Kokborok
The name Kokborok literally means 'spoken language of man', from kók ('verbal', 'language') and borok ('people', 'human'). The language once had its own Koloma script, said to date to around the 1st century AD, which fell out of use by the 14th century.

History of Kokborok
Kokborok was traditionally called Tripuri or Tipra Kok, with the name Kokborok becoming standard in the 20th century as part of a wider assertion of Tripuri identity. It was declared an official language of Tripura in 1979, and a full Bible translation was completed in 1976. Despite this official recognition, the community remains divided over which script best represents the language, a debate that continues in Tripura's politics and education system today.
Is Kokborok Hard to Learn?
Kokborok's core vocabulary comes from the Boro-Garo branch of Tibeto-Burman and is unrelated to English or to the Indo-Aryan languages spoken around Tripura, so little can be guessed from Hindi or Bengali. It has a two-way tone distinction, high and low, that changes word meaning and takes real practice for English speakers to hear. Learning materials are also split across three competing scripts, Bengali, Latin, and an unofficial Kokmari script, so resources are not standardized.
