History of Venda
Venda speakers trace their history to the Mapungubwe kingdom of the 13th century, one of southern Africa's earliest complex states, and to later Venda-speaking capitals such as Dzata, founded under the chief remembered as Thoho-ya-Ndou. Linguists describe Tshivenda as having developed through centuries of contact between Sotho-Tswana- and Kalanga-speaking groups from around 1400, which is part of why it shares vocabulary with both the Sotho and Shona-Kalanga language clusters despite sitting on its own branch of Bantu. Today it is one of South Africa's 12 official languages, spoken mainly in Limpopo province.
Is Venda Hard to Learn?
Venda has the noun-class agreement typical of Bantu languages, but its orthography is its own puzzle: sounds not found in neighbouring Sotho or Nguni languages are written with a circumflex below the letter, a system that historically caused real problems on typewriters and early computer keyboards and still trips up anyone typing on a standard layout. Depressor and breathy consonants add a further layer that's easy to miss by ear.
