History of Venetian
Venetian developed from the Vulgar Latin of northeastern Italy and became the language of the Republic of Venice, which used it across Mediterranean trade and diplomacy for a thousand years until 1797. It carried real literary prestige — Carlo Goldoni wrote his comedies in it — and left loanwords in Greek, Turkish and Croatian. Italian unification and standardized schooling pushed it out of official use, but it remains in everyday spoken use in the Veneto, and emigrants carried it to Brazil where the descendant variety Talian has co-official status in several municipalities.
Is Venetian Hard to Learn?
As a Romance language, Venetian shares a great deal of vocabulary with Italian, Spanish and French, and its grammar will feel familiar to anyone who has studied one of those. Distinctive features include the verb 'xe' for 'is', obligatory subject pronouns where Italian drops them, and interrogative forms unlike standard Italian.
