History of Avar
Avar speakers formed a series of highland khanates in Dagestan, most notably the Avar Khanate centered on Khunzakh, which survived into the 19th century. Avar resistance was central to the long Caucasian War against the Russian Empire, led in the 1830s-1850s by the Avar-born imam Shamil. The language was first written in Arabic script, then briefly in Latin script in the early Soviet period, before Cyrillic became standard in 1938.
Is Avar Hard to Learn?
Avar has a very large consonant inventory, including ejective and pharyngealized sounds written with the palochka Ӏ, plus a system of grammatical noun classes that trigger agreement even in everyday greetings. There are separate forms of 'hello' depending on whether you are addressing a man, a woman, or a group. The case system also marks fine distinctions of location and direction typical of Northeast Caucasian languages.
